The Certification System of the Japanese Board of Dental Anesthesiologist (JBDA) was launched in 1977. There are 1,452 dental anesthesiologists certified by the JBDA in Japan (as of August 2024). To be certified by the JBDA, a dental anesthesiologist must pass its test consisting of selection by presented documents, and written and oral examinations. The test is carried out every year and the final results are announced in August. The JBDA certification is valid for a period of five (5) years, after which it must be applied for renewal. From this year (2010) on, new applicants for certification are required to have a record of assistance at AHA-BLS instructor courses, and those for renewal need to meet this requirement from 2011 on.
The Board Certified Dental Anesthesiology Specialist (BCDAS) System was established in 2005 and officially approved by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan in 2006. Any applicant for BCDAS qualification must meet all the requirements below:
- The applicant shall hold a dental practitioner license registered at the MHLW of Japan.
- The applicant shall be a dental anesthesiologist certified by the Japanese Board of Dental Anesthesiologist (JBDA).
- The applicant shall be a member of the Japanese Dental Society of Anesthesiology (JDSA) for more than five (5) consecutive years, during which he/she shall have been engaged in the area of dental anesthesiology with over 500 cases of anesthesiological interventions.
- The application shall have been accredited by a Consultant of Dental Anesthesiology Specialist (CDAS) who is the head of the dental anesthesiology institution to which the applicant belongs.
- The applicant shall have successful achievements in dental anesthesiology worthy of a JBDA-certified dental anesthesiologist (the applicant shall have presented the results of his/her study at annual meetings of the Japanese Dental Society of Anesthesiology (JDSA) and at least three (3) monographs shall have been printed in the Journal of the Society).
All qualified applicants must take written examination regarding the anesthesiological care path of the presented cases and general items of anesthesiology as well as oral examination for about 30 minutes.
Once qualified, the actual cases he/she cares and his/her activities in various societies related to anesthesiology are reviewed every five (5) years for acceptance or rejection of the qualification renewal.
At present, there are 376 qualified BCDAS in Japan, accounting for about 10% of the total number of the JDSA members.
