Society Objectives

The Japanese Society for the Temporomandibular Joint has been establ ished to promote research in all aspects of Temporomandibualr joint and rela ted organic and functional components, to encourage development of treatment for diseases associated with Temporomandibular joint and masticatory system, and to cooperate among investigators and clinicians in multidiscipinary dent al, medical and basic science field.

Organization and membership

Recently, the Society has 3272 members. Membership is open to qualified individuals who are engaged in or interested in Temporomandibular Joint and related research, or in other scientific disciplines related to masticatory system and diseases. Thus active members are participated from various field of basic, clinical, surgical and nonsurgical dentistry, medicine, and science. The Executive Committee is consisted of 19 members, and Executive Director is Dr.Masatoshi Ohnishi. Number of 91 councilors are appointed and acted as council of all of activities of the Society.

Committees

Eight committees are organized; Editorial board committee, Nominate committee for Society's award, Scientific terminology committee, Committee for board of the specialty , Committee for Diagnostics for TMD , Postgraduate education and program committee , Public information and International affair committ ee , and Ad hoc committee for regulation a nd law of the Society.

Official publication

The Journal of Japanese Society for Temporomandibular Joint was founded by Dr.Toshiro Kaneda in 1989. Two issues per year in an earlier period and currently three issues per year has been published in Japanese with English abstracts. Each issue includes 10 to 15 original and/or clinical articles, and abstracts of the annual meeting in the last issus in the year.

Society History

Prior Society's formal foundation in Nagoya city on July, 1988, the first annual meeting of its own scientific session was held in Jun, 1980 at Nagoya University Hospital under the leadership of Dr.Tohru Oka. Around 200 participants were gathered and 26 scientific papers were presented. The background of the presenter was from Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Diagnosis, and et c. Since　1980 successful first scientific session, an annual meeting and sc ientific session was held at various locations in Japan until 1987. The membership included almost 1200 members at that time, and during 1987 annual meeting, the establishment of formal Japanese Society for Temporomandibular Joint was decided.
